3-shower-a-day August

In the last four weeks Lincoln has experienced some days with amazingly high humidity.  After walking the dog, shower time.  After harvesting tomatoes, shower time.  After a bike ride, shower time.  After getting the mail, shower time.  (Okay, maybe that was an exaggeration.)  I prefer to have really warm summers and really cold winters, so I've been okay with it.  Rusty, less so.  It has been perfect weather for growing foxtail, which has invaded our yard and the yards of all the neighbors.  I picked 1-2 five-gallon buckets daily for nearly two weeks!

My dear friend, Linda McKee, thought she had won her bout with breast cancer three years ago, but now it seems to have completely taken over her body, invading her bones.  She lives in CO but is still close to a group of Irving teachers.  She requested a gathering of the group, and we had a wonderful dinner and evening together.

We joined my Aunt LeAnne and her family in Omaha to celebrate her 80th birthday.  She looked well and seemed happy to have such a large crowd attend her celebration.

Although I have no picture (what was I thinking?) I had a lovely evening meeting with 6 ladies from my Widowette Group.  Each of us lost our husbands 10 years ago and have not had a meeting for nine years!  It was great to reconnect with the ladies with whom I shared my heart.

The Fishermen is a book written by Chigozie Obioma and was the latest selection for "Irving Reads."  It was on the short list for the Man Booker Award in 2015.  The book is pretty heavy and somewhat gruesome, but I felt it  was redeeming in the end.  Twenty of our Irving Readers had a wonderful dinner and then were joined by Chigozie Obionma for and enlightening book talk!
Obioma is currently an Assistant Professor at UNL and teaches creative writing.

Lindsay, Jeff and Celeste needed to change living arrangements, so Rusty and I volunteered to take a couple of van loads for them.  The first load went fine, although hefting boxes up a couple of flights of stairs was no fun.  We loaded the van for the second time and then found out it wouldn't start.  Jeff and Rusty got it going with a pair of jumper cables, but it meant a new battery was needed for the van.  This month we also need to buy 4 new tires.  Ugh!

I was working on my computer in the basement while Rusty was starting supper.  Soon I heard lots of screaming!  I ran upstairs and found that Rusty had badly sliced the end of his finger.  He kept yelling, "Now I won't be able to play golf!"  A quick trip to LinkCare and several stitches later, the doctor assured Rusty that he could still play golf.

Gretchen turned 1 on Sept. 6.  She had her very first taste of ice cream.  We are now able to leave her loose in the house for a couple of hours and come home to find everything still intact.  I think that's a big plus!  She loves to play ball and will bring it back to us more times than we wish.  If we don't pay attention to her, she shoves the ball into our leg or backside, demanding more.   Then we have to put her in "time out."
Gretchen rests on "Earl", the chaise lounge.

The first three days of this week were very high winds and lots and lots of pollen.  I hibernated indoors and nearly went crazy.  Can't wait to leave next week for another BWCAW trip where they don't have ragweed!
